A29. Buddha, 14.5cms, Tibeto-Chinese, Kangxi period.
Buddha is depicted seated in vajraparyankasana on a double lotus throne with his right hand touching the earth and his left resting in his lap.
The sculpture is heavily cast and the robe edges are finely engraved with floral and foliate patterns bordered by tiny pearls.
The sculpture is now unsealed. Two small holes on the top of the lotus throne behind the Buddha suggest that it once supported a mandorla.
This sculpture and the Bodhisattva A30 have been made in the same workshop and may have once formed part of a Buddhist pantheon.
