PS6. Buddha, China, 16th century, copper alloy, 14.8 cms
The Buddha is depicted seated cross legged on a double lotus throne with his right hand touching the ground in front of him. This represents a defining moment in his life when after a long period of meditation he overcame the temptations thrown at him by Mara, king of the demons and achieved an understanding of the true nature of things or enlightenment.
This Buddha has a full face, small mouth and large arched eyebrows typical of the period. His narrow almost closed eyes reflect the inner peace he has achieved. The sculpture retains much of its lacquer imparting to it a warm brown glow.
